One of the questions that I often get from clients is, “Do I really need to use a High Efficiency (He) detergent in my washing machine?” The answer depends on if you have a high efficiency washer.

Regular detergents used in high efficiency washing machines can cause problems with the machines. Clothes may not rinse properly and you may have increased suds in your laundry. This is because your high efficiency washer uses less water and cleans clothes with a tumbling action instead of agitating your laundry as older model dryers do.

He detergents are specifically designed to be low sudsing. The formulation is made so that you need to use a smaller amount than in a traditional washer. He detergents will increase the lifespan of your He washing machine. Many manufacturers recommend specific brands of He detergent. Check your instruction manual for recommendations.

If you use a non-He detergent in your He washing machine, you may have a lot of suds as a result. Think of what happens when regular dish soap is placed in a dishwasher. Foaming suds everywhere!
